Amboyna Burl Pen and Pencil Set

Amboyna is among the most expensive and sought-after of all burls. It is technically not a distinct species but is the name of the burl wood from any of the Pterocarpus species. The name is derived from Ambon Island in Indonesia, where much of the figured wood is believed to have been initially exported. It is also found in Borneo and other South East Asian countries. The wood is protected with a friction polish applied while turning on the lathe giving a hard, bright, high gloss finish. The Pen is a ballpoint taking a Parker style refill. The pencil takes 2mm thick replacement lead (the typical mechanical pencil takes 0.7mm lead – this lead is 2.0mm or about 3 times as thick – a perfect size for those of us who press too hard and constantly break the thinner lead). A sharpener is conveniently placed inside the plunger. To sharpen, extend the lead, pull the plunger mechanism out of the pencil, insert the lead into the sharpening tube and rotate. Be sure to empty the shavings from the sharpener before replacing the plunger. A set of 5 extra pencil leads is also included. The pen and pencil are each 5 ½” long.
