Large Vajrasattva/Dorje Sempa Rupa
This antique statue of Vajrasattva depicts the Sambhogakaya Buddha in yab/yum - male and female unified. Vajrasattva's consort, Dorje Nyenma embraces him. Vajrasattva embodies the Five Buddha Families and is traditionally associated with purification and confession. The practice of Vajrasattva mantra is the second of the Ngondro practices of the Vajrayana. But Vajrasattva is also inherently associated with the Dzogchen Lineage, where the primordial Buddha Samantabhadra to Vajrasattva and from there down into the human lineages.
The donor believes this is an early 19th century Tibetan (not Chinese) piece and is delighted to pass on the blessings of Heruka.
The statue is old, some of the gilt has worn away, and it has clearly been used by practitioners. On the back of the statue, one of the feet of the smaller Korje Nyenma is broken off—see close-up photo. Impermanance.
This large impressive statue measures 13 inches high, and 8.5 inches across the front of the base.
