MEMBRANES

Artist: Gordon Leverton

Medium: Acrylic

36" x 36"

Gordon Leverton is a self-taught artist who has been working full-time at his practice since 2006.

Following his passion for music, he worked in many facets of the music industry including, performance, writing, and promotion, which eventually led to his dream job of owning his own record store.

After selling the store, Gordon became a stay-at-home father and through his daily walks through the streets and alleys of his adopted city of Hamilton, Ontario, became fascinated by the inner networks and webs of the city. His latent love of art and design soon emerged, and he was thus inspired to capture these emotions on canvas.

Gordon’s work has appeared in numerous publications, broadcasts and journals and is widely collected. He makes his home in Hamilton with his partner Nancy, two teenage children and Hugo (the cat) close by his side.

Artist’s Statement
I completed a new series called Sightlines several years ago when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. During my treatment, I spent some time at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton – which is on the mountain brow. During my stay, I had a spectacular vista view of the whole lower city of Hamilton. I was drawn to the interconnectivity of communities, streets, yards and houses and I knew once I was out of the hospital, I wanted to paint these views. It was these views that inspired me to create Membranes.

Membranes has an orange diglow effect, with traces of neon. It was held in my personal collection and it is the final piece of its size in the series.  I am thrilled to have Membranes available in the Featured Art section of DVSAs 50th Annual Art Auction.
