Suzy Gonzalez - This is What You Were Born For

Suzy Gonzalez has created a vivid reminder that the challenges you face every day are what make you unique - precisely "What You Were Born For."
From the Artist:
This altar is dedicated to self-love and knowing your self-worth. No matter what you’re doing today, this is what you were born for. It’s a reminder to live life to the fullest, but to also know that it’s okay to slow down, to rest, because that is also what we’re born for. Under the paint is a layer of corn husks, serving as a reminder of ancient Mesoamerican spirituality that continues to nourish today.
Looking to our heritage gives our existence purpose, and lighting the candles on the altar will remind us of all who came before so that we may exist in this moment, the moment we were born for.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Giving attention to the origins of both food and art, I analyze what it means to decolonize art, art history, and consumption. Through a Xicanx veganism, I find interest in the decolonization of one’s diet, or a desire to reclaim the pre-colonial plant-based nourishment of my ancestors. Through painting, sculpture, and "mestiza media" works, I create figures that exist somewhere in the middle of social binaries. My artwork serves as a platform for working through my own intersections as well as striving for an intercultural conversation with folks outside of my identity labels. This, I hope, will open doors to compassion and healing in this world of destruction.
