From the artist:
The altar, entitled " The Secret Garden Meets Woodstock," was influenced by the book and theatrical productions of that name, a childhood favorite of my daughter's. It took an "evolutional turn" in the process of its creation, and the little girl in the book became a 60's version of a flower child, wandering into the garden.
The altar was constructed using paint, paper/plastic appliques, silk floral pieces, and a small wooden swing.
The Woodstock girl was stitched with many different types of fabrics, lace, art yarn, buttons, and small charms. She is held upright with a short wooden dowl.
Of personal significance was the opportunity I had to be joined in the creation of the altar by my daughter and my daughter-in-law. I experienced great joy and satisfaction from having all of us working together on this project. The contributions made by these young women, both of whom are extremely gifted artistically, were made with joy and enthusiasm for their work.
The altar represents the spirit of childhood, the beauty of nature, and the wonder of the unexpected. It is meant to be uplifting for those who pass by, as an affirmation of the good in this world and the potential for unexpected blessings.
