Model Dump Truck

The design of the Model Dump Truck, built by Phil Saroyan, comes from one of a series of “Construction Grade Models” that Wood magazine has published. The series also includes and Excavator, a Concrete Truck, a Steam Roller, a Crane, a Tractor/Trailer and many more. This Model Dump Truck is constructed from Ipe (a dark wood from South America) and Basswood (a light-colored wood from Eastern North America). The Model Dump Truck is approximately 15” long, 6” Tall and 6” wide. It is finished with Tung Oil bringing out the natural color of the wood.

When Phil first saw the design in Wood magazine, he thought like most, “what a great toy for children.” Phil has made many of these models and has given them to his grandchildren. Since building his first model, the Excavator, he has learned much about fixing broken models and constructing them to make them stronger. After several rounds of repair, Phil has learned that if these models are to be given to children, one must make sure the child completely understands the concept of “FRAGILE.” Unlike the metal and impact plastic toys purchased today, this is made completely of wood and many of the parts are only ¼” thick. This model will endure “GENTLE” play and will provide hours of enjoyment.
