Painted Bunting (Collage)

Collage on Paper:

Painted Bunting

by Kathy Windrow

About the Artist. The jewel like colors of the male Painted Bunting take my breath away every time I see them. Although they are common songbirds along the Gulf Coast, they are precious to birding novices and experts alike. I chose collage for this piece because I love the immediacy of the collage process and felt it suited the visual impact of this dazzling bird.

Kathy Windrow Artist Statement. Kathy Windrow is an artist and art historian living with her architect husband Jess Galloway and their dog Miska in Dallas and Santa Fe. Her research focuses on nonWestern art traditions, art of the American Southwest, birds in the Roman wall paintings at Oplontis, iconography in folk art, and contemporary art. She has lectured widely on the art of Asia, Africa and the Americas, Días de los Muertos, and Mexican folk art. Windrow’s creative work involves mythological and topographical landscape issues, change and changelessness, found object sculpture, and sitespecific installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally as well as in Peru, Hungary and Italy. Windrow designed scenery in the 1990s for Extra Virgin Performance Cooperative at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas and for the theatre on the Eastfield Campus. Since 1991, she has taught drawing and art history on 60 SMU Abroad programs in Oaxaca, Italy, and Spain, often serving as director. She retires this year from her 24 year adjunct position in SMU’s entertainment design program and from the Eastfield Campus of Dallas College where she has taught art and art history full time since 1992.
