Japanese Tenugui - town scene with Akitas

Japanese hand towels or tenugui have been used by the people of Japan since the mid-1600ʼs. In the Meji Era, they began dyeing the cloth using a technique called “chuusen” which is unique to Japan.

The chuusen dyeing technique used to create Japanese towels or tenugui is a method where the dye is repeatedly poured on top of the textile, leading to a lack of dye on the reverse side.

Tenugui are Japanese hand towels used in Japan since the mid-1600’s.  They are dyed using a method called “chuusen”, which is unique to Japan.

Tenugui are used as gift wrapping, headbands and decorative tapestry.

What a wonderful way to present a gift to someone special.
