Japanese hand towels or tenugui have been used by the people of Japan since the mid-1600ʼs. In the Meji Era, they began dyeing the cloth using a technique called “chuusen” which is unique to Japan.
The chuusen dyeing technique used to create Japanese towels or tenugui is a method where the dye is repeatedly poured on top of the textile, leading to a lack of dye on the reverse side.
