Knowing how to conduct yourself when dining out with colleagues or clients is an important skill set. Today many people have the credentials and hard skills but lack in the soft skills. It's the soft skills that are so desperately needed to succeed and be exceptional in the workplace.
The business lunch or dinner is more than a meal. It's a time when new contacts assess each other, relationships are developed, and contracts are signed. What could be worse than delivering a great presentation to prospective clients, only to lose the business because of how you handled yourself at a follow-up lunch. Poor dining etiquette can not only sabotage a business deal, but also hamper a job interview or block a promotion.
You’ll be more self-assured in any business meeting over a meal and know what your role is whether you are the guest or host. Dining Etiquette is an essential skill set in the corporate world, and the knowledge you learn will last your lifetime. You will feel more relaxed, poised and confident when dining out with clients or colleagues, whether it be a casual meal or a black-tie event.
About Gina:
As a career counselor for 15 years at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, I learned firsthand from recruiters what it took to get the job. After initial interviews on campus, most students were invited to a reception networking event and then a lunch or dinner. With skills and GPAs being equal, the decision for hiring was based on the soft skills. Could this applicant be sent to Chicago and take clients out to dinner? Manners Matter.
Gina currently conducts workshops at Dominican University, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, Haas at UC Berkeley…..the list is long.
It takes more than a college degree to succeed in the world of work today.
Projecting a polished professional image and knowing proper dining manners will place you light years ahead of the competition.
Why a lunch or dinner interview?
Employers want to evaluate your social skills and see if you can handle yourself gracefully under pressure. You will be evaluated on your looks, your clothing, your body language and your ability to converse and interact with others naturally and easily. Receptions, lunch and dinner meals will be the main focus of those interactions.
Good manners are important because they show that you possess self-control, that you exude civility and that you care about and are capable of respecting others.
