Home made pie delivered to your door….just how does it get any better than this?

Once a month, Chris is offering to share her gift for pie making with you and you get to choose the kind of pie you want. Each pie is delivered to your door in a sturdy Tupperware pie carrier on the day of your choice. Chris can make any kind of pie from the traditional fruit pies to cream pies and chicken pot pies. She only uses the best ingredients and takes no shortcuts. Your pie is homemade from the crust to the whipped cream. In Chris’s words…”Make this year the year you have a pie!”

The Back story…..

Chris’ mother, Ruth Richmond (P.E.O. Chapter BW Napa), makes terrific pies. When Chris was growing up their family often had homemade pie for dessert. If anyone gave their family any kind of fruit, it ended up in a pie. Instead of birthday cake, they got their favorite pie. Chris’ father reminisced about the lemon meringue pies Chris’ mother made on a wood stove when they were first married.

But Chris’ mother was not the kind of cook to let her daughter in the kitchen. Even though she got married without knowing how to cook, Chris was undaunted. She was pretty sure that if you could read, you could cook.

She got a rude awakening the first time she tried to make a pie. Her crust was a disaster. How could something so simple be so hard? So, she asked the expert - her mother. Her answer: “I always use the recipe in The Good Housekeeping Cookbook. I just use Crisco and a fork. “She was no help at all.

Chris persisted, trying different recipes and reading all the cookbooks. She talked to everyone she knew who had a made a pie. She tried different ingredients, from pastry flour to butter to vodka. Some people recommended having everything ice cold. Some people wore gloves. Some people used marble rolling pins. Chris used pastry cutters, food processors and stand mixers. She tried them all. Disaster after disaster. If she could roll the crust out, it fell apart when she tried to put in the pie plate. If she could get into the pie plate it was tough. Sometimes she was able to cheat by pasting the crust together in the pie plate with a little water.

Then one day, it happened. She made the crust…rolled it out and it was perfect. A miracle! A gift from God! Like waterskiing or riding a bike, once you have made a pie crust, you can always make a pie crust.

Once a month (on a date we pick) we order our pie which is delivered to our home in a pie carrier that we keep until the next pie comes…the next month.

We happened to share our pies with our dinner group and there is always lost of discussion about what kind of pie we want next, cream pie, fruit pie, cheesecake, what will it be? Custard pie is the request for next month and we can't wait. This was a great way to support P.E.O. and really get something very special in return.
