This Sunbonnet Sue Quilt was lovingly created by Pat Lakers, sister of Chapter ON member, Joan Lashmett.
About Sunbonnet Sue….While sunbonnet-clad little girls existed in quilt patterns of the 1800s, Sunbonnet Sue’s rise to folk image fame began in the early 1900s.
Bertha Corbett Melcher published a book, “The Sunbonnet Babies,” in the year 1900, in which she depicted young girls with their faces hidden by bonnets. Sue has remained popular over the years, appearing in quilts and even in clothing.
Pat says she “had the pink family in mind” when she created this Sunbonnet Sue quilt. She pictures it going on a little girl’s bed and hopes she treasures it. It measures 64” by 82”. The fabric is all cotton and can be thrown in the washing machine and dryer. (Pat says she “would put a color grabber in the first wash –just in case there would be any bleeding, although she says there should not be.”) The quilt top, appliquéing and quilting was all done on the sewing machine.
Pat says she “loves everything there is about quilting-from picking out the patterns, choosing the fabric, cutting the pieces, sewing them together and the finished quilt.”
Sunbonnet Sue is clearly a labor of love on Pat’s part…. and a work of art!
