Thanka of Machig Labdrön Refuge Field

Machig Labdrön was an 11th century Tibetan yogini whose teachings and practices of Chöd (“severance” or “cutting through”) have profoundly influenced all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. She was unique in being both a woman and Tibetan, diverging from the traditional norm of male, Indian Buddhist masters. Her life is an inspiring story of a committed practitioner, at-times beggar woman, brilliant teacher, mother and lineage founder.

At this time there are only eight Cho Refuge Field scroll paintings, with Machig Labdron at the center, that are photographed and documented. Seven of these appear to be based on a 19th century block print image from East Tibet. The thanka offered in this auction is a reproduction copy of one of these thankas which is now hanging in the Meditation Hall at Wonderwell.

While Lama Samten was in residence at Wonderwell, she had numerous inquiries about reproducing both the Green Tara and Machig Labdrön thankas and decided that the best method was to have giclee prints made to achieve the highest quality reproduction of the thankas which hang at Wonderwell. Only a limited number of these prints were made. The quality, intensity of color, and level of detail is remarkable.

This is professionally mounted, matted, and framed, to best display a print of this size. The frame is carved wood.

Dimensions: 13" x 21", 28.5" x 36" framed.

Note: This item must be picked up at Wonderwell; shipping is not available.
