Coffee with Hernan Carvente - National Youth Chair, Coalition for Juvenile Justice

Have coffee (or Skype) with Hernan Carvente, National Youth Chair for the Coalition for Juvenile Justice, and share at least an hour of conversation about his work with detained, incarcerated, and formerly incarcerated individuals. He himself is a formerly incarcerated youth. In June 2012, Mr. Carvente was released from a secure juvenile prison after serving four years for the crime of attempted murder.

Today, Hernan Carvente is the National Youth Chair for the Coalition for Juvenile Justice and he works on program development, improving conditions of confinement, and incorporating youth and family partnerships in facility-based and statewide juvenile justice policy reform. Mr. Carvente has conducted trainings with diverse stakeholders such as policymakers, researchers, students, and professionals in probation, child welfare, juvenile justice and corrections.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Mr. Carvente to the New York State Juvenile Justice Advisory Group (NYS JJAG) and the Citizens Policy and Complain Review Council (CPCRC). As a JJAG member, Mr. Carvente collaborates with system stakeholders to develop and implement New York State’s federal juvenile justice plan as well as manage funds from the federal government. As a CPCRC member, he ensures that local correctional facilities are acting in accordance with correctional standards and treating individuals fairly. Mr. Carvente also currently serves as the Official Youth Chair for the Coalition for Juvenile Justice’s (CJJ) National Youth Committee, as well as a member on advisory boards with the National Academies of Science and the Annie E. Casey Foundation. His passion for criminal justice system reform stems from his own personal experience in the juvenile justice system.

Mr. Carvente was awarded the “Next Generation Champion for Change Award” by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the “Spirit of Youth Award” by CJJ. He graduated from the CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a degree in criminal justice and is a first-generation Mexican American, who was the first male in his family to graduate from college.
