"Peony in Purple" Denise Fox

"Peony in Purple" Denise Fox. Archival photograph. 16" x 20". Framed.

Winters are very cold in NM and every spring I wait impatiently for new flowers to bloom.  Walking with my two dogs, often twice a day and on the same route, I scout new things to photograph: blooming trees, weeds, unusual flowers, architecture, colors, and found objects.

My roots are in agriculture; both my dad and stepdad were farmer/ranchers.  My grandparents were avid gardeners.  I grew up with much time to explore the outdoors.  Getting to know snakes, toads, names of trees and flowers, the magic of nightly blooming moonflowers, and the return of flowering bulbs annually was fun.  At age 12 I was given the responsibility of mowing the large expansive yard on an old John Deere riding mower.  I'm partial to irises because they remind me of spending time with my grandma is her 'sea' of iris garden.

I see the work and joy of photographing beautiful flowers a documentary project; every year I often photograph the same irises, poppies, and tulips.  I try to make my images better and more unique technically.  This year I used a small LED light with colored filters to magnify the colors of the flowers.  Printing the images larger than I usually print is important to show the dynamism of colors and detail in the flowers.  This peony plant lives in my neighbor's yard and I'm always amazed with it's familiar beauty.

Perennials, both planted and wild, are like friends I reacquaint myself with each year.  Can I make the photographs as beautiful as the actual flower?  Probably not, but I sure like trying.
