Gateway Memorial Arch - Small - Eero Saarinen. Saint Louis, MO

This small version of Eero Saarinen’s monumentally scaled parabolic arch includes some of the adjacent Saint Louis cityscape including the State Capitol. The arch was the winner of an open international competition for a site immediately adjacent to the Missouri State Capitol along the shore of the Mississippi River. The design incorporates a one of a kind interior funicular train to bring visitors to an arcing observation floor at the summit of the arch. The winning design follows similar large scaled parabolic arch forms by LeCorbusier’s unbuilt entry to the Palace of the Soviets competition entry, and Adalberto Libera’s triumphal arch for EUR in Rome.
