Matt Sterbenz

A note from the artist:

“I seek to achieve a greater understanding of the southwestern landscape that surrounds me. As an avid hiker, I desire to convey our geology from vantage points that many Arizonans overlook. Rather than simply portraying a landscape, I strive to paint the experience of being outdoors. It is with this painting process that I hope to share my outdoors experience with others. This Little Free Library features scenes and landscapes from across our great state of Arizona, based on paintings created on location.”

Artist bio:

Matt Sterbenz grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He spent most of his childhood with a pencil in hand, drawing his surroundings. After receiving an oil painting set at the age of ten, the pencil was always accompanied by brushes. Matt graduated from Arizona State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. He frequently finds himself hiking and painting outdoors; a process which he believes is critical for producing effective studio work.

Matt has participated in some of the nation’s top plein air invitational events, including the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art and the Sedona Plein Air Festival. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Plein Air Magazine, and Southwest Art Magazine. He is currently represented by Amery Bohling Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona.
