Marlene Yuen, Sack of Rice from Peace Together

Marlene Yuen
Sack of Rice from Peace Together , 2024
Screen Print on Washi Paper
19.5 x 12.5 inches

Framed by Fine Art Framing & Services Ltd.

A screen print from Marlene Yuen's installation Peace Together (2024), featured in Richmond Art Gallery's current exhibition FOODWAYS. Yuen brings Steveston’s now-closed Hong Wo General Store vividly to life in our imaginations with her 200+ Pop-inflected relief and screen prints depicting the groceries once sold at this iconic shop.

Marlene Yuen is a Vancouver-based artist who received her bachelor’s of studio arts in 1998 from the University of British Columbia. Yuen is a storyteller; she creates comics, prints and book works to convey stories. She weaves text and imagery to create sequential art. She finds inspiration from graphic design, children picture books, patterns, vintage handbills, and posters. After years of making one-of-a-kind books, she rediscovered printmaking as being an essential part of her practice. The ability to print multiples allows for further sharing and passing on of stories.

Marlene has exhibited at galleries, artist-run centers, and cultural events in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Japan. A multidisciplinary artist, her current focus is on handmade books; her artist books have been retained in special collections nationally and internationally. Currently, Marlene is focusing her subject matters on Chinese Canadian labour history and preservation of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown.
