James Hueter was born in San Francisco in 1925 and developed an early interest in art. He came to Claremont in 1942 to study at Pomona College. Service in World War II intervened, but he returned to finish college and earn an M.F.A. at Claremont Graduate School where he studied with Henry Lee McFee, Whitney Smith and Albert Stewart. He designed a home and studio in the chaparral of Claremont in 1965. Hueter taught art at Mt. San Antonio College for 30 years and was represented by galleries in Los Angeles
