2 highly rated Robert Mondavi Cabernet Savignon wines

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville
The Estates 2019, 750ml

# 6 on Wine Spectator, Top 100 of 2022

This wine marks a comeback for the venerable Robert Mondavi Winery, with its first appearance in our Top 100 since 2011. Winemaker Nova Cadamatre helped oversee significant replanting in the famed To Kalon vineyard during her tenure (she left the winery in 2021). As young vine parcels came into production, she employed a strict selection for the winery’s The Reserve, instead feeding the new-parcel fruit into the middle-tier Oakville bottling (renamed The Estates starting with the 2018 vintage). Relying on organic farming practices, with native yeast fermentations and no filtration at bottling, this is very much a new and promising Mondavi.

Tasting Note

Throws off some pretty gorgeous aromas of violet, anise and sweet bay leaf, with a core of ripe, streamlined boysenberry and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors following closely. The finish has a racy graphite edge, while the fruit and aromas just spill through. Approachable now, too. Drink now through 2034.—James Molesworth

Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Magnum

Winemaker Notes

Aromas of cherry, purple plum, sage, sandalwood, mint, and vanilla bean. Expressive and layered with rich, sweet black fruit and warm oak spice. Lush texture, bright acidity, fine tannins, vibrant fruit notes.

Critical Acclaim

TP 93 Tasting Panel

Dominated by 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of the other Bordeaux red grapes, this wine speaks of heritage and prestige. Broad, silky, and powerful, the graceful liquid is enhanced by dark chocolate, white pepper, black plum, vio lets, and sweet earth.

The base 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is certainly impressive, and since there are roughly 90,000 cases, it’s an incredible achievement. Classic darker currants, tobacco leaf, truffly earth, and spicy oak all define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. Based off 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, buy a case and enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years. Best after 2022.

JS 92 James Suckling

Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. Juicy and extremely drinkable. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and some malbec. Drink from 2023.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is generous and stylish with a pleasing finish on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits aromas and flavors of ripe berries and an accent of oak. Enjoy it with grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: December 9, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

WS 91 Wine Spectator

A solid, forthright Cabernet, with cedar and warm stone notes framing the core of gently steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Savory and loam accents flash through the finish.
