About the Artist and the Piece:

Jane McQuitty, a sessional instructor at Alberta University of the Arts and a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, brings a unique perspective to her artistry.

This artwork, acquired by Kathleen Moors through Levis auction in 2023, now seeks a new home due to Kathleen's need to downsize her collection. Jane McQuitty's connection to the academic world provides depth to her work, as she possesses significant knowledge about the intricate interplay of politics, economics, and science surrounding contemporary issues related to our land, water, and natural resources.

In her own words:

"In North America, the prevailing narrative of our connection to nature has often been portrayed through the lens of romantic individualism and a profound affinity for wilderness. However, the reality is more complex. This emphasis on wilderness can sometimes blind us to the evolving relationship between urbanized landscapes, the concept of wilderness as a land management tool, and the changing state of the wild near our cities, where the majority of us now reside.

To label a piece of land as wilderness implies a static, systemic context, one that assumes conditions frozen in time, unaffected by the colonization projects involving land conversion, population growth, and resource extraction. But what about the land that has resisted past attempts at domestication? What about the landscapes that have hybridized with introduced species escaping colonial influence? Along the fringes of our urban areas, lands once thoroughly exploited are returning to a state of rest, giving rise to new forms of wildness.

I propose that the time is ripe for us to explore the concept of 'wildness' as a sibling to 'wilderness.' It calls for new cultural forms to emerge that can articulate and reflect the stories of these evolving landscapes. After all, how can we hope to preserve what we cannot name or categorize, especially if our culture has never provided the vocabulary to do so?"

This artwork invites you to delve deeper into the evolving narrative of our relationship with the land, challenging traditional notions of wilderness and offering a fresh perspective on the landscapes that surround us today.
