Della Robbia Madonna & Child 9" round

This lovely classic Della Robbia ceramic features Madonna and Child. It is especially beautiful as Baby Jesus is resting his head on his sleeping Mother’s shoulder. The raised multi-colored fruit glaze and jewel tones are a beautiful frame for the images.  The word Madonna is derived from the Italian 'ma donna,' or 'my lady' and is used to describe Mary, the mother of Christ.  While the Virgin was largely painted alone in Roman times, she became associated with the Child Jesus, in a gesture of prayer or reverence to God.
