The Red Stripe Art Wheel by Rebecca Hed

Artist Statement:

The Red Stripe is wheel completely covered in duct tape. Each individual shape was hand cut and placed on the wheel to create a black, white and red pattern. By choosing to incorporate straight lines into the pattern, the piece challenges the round shape of a three spoke wheel. The white and black backgrounds allow for the one red stripe to advance off of the triangular pattern.

Artist Bio:

Rebecca Hed graduated from Concordia Academy in the spring of 2017 and was apart of their new Emerging Artist Curriculum. Currently, she is a freshman at Bethel University and is planning on receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a minor in business. Rebecca’s favorite art medium to work with is duct tape. By using duct tape, she is able to give tape a new purpose besides fixing things. She uses different techniques to create unique textures and patterns that help give duct tape a new meaning.

Over the past few years, Rebecca’s art has been exhibited in the 2016 and 2017 Minnesota State High School League Visual Arts State Exhibit, won the 2016 Compas Award at the Minnesota State Fair, placed second in the 14th Annual High School Honors Exhibition at Concordia University St. Paul, and placed in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition, meaning her duct tape art is currently hanging in Betty McCollum’s office in the House of Representatives and will remain there for one year.
