Deanna ThompsonĀ - Animal Welfare

Name: Deanna Thompson

Industry: Animal Welfare

Job Title and Employer: Executive Director, Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS)

Area of Expertise: Non-profit Management & Animal Welfare

Bio: Deanna Thompson is the Executive Director for Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS). She left her successful oil and gas career in 2010 to lead of one of Alberta’s fastest growing animal welfare agencies.

Under Deanna’s leadership, AARCS expanded their operations to include an animal shelter and in-house veterinary hospital dedicated to helping homeless animals. AARCS rescues and adopts out thousands of animals each year and has over 3,000 volunteers province-wide. During the pandemic, Deanna led the project to open a second animal shelter and cat adoption centre in Edmonton in order to expand their reach in the province. The risky, but calculated move during the pandemic has saved countless lives.

Deanna believes strongly in professionalizing the animal welfare industry, building collaborative relationships across sectors and enacting societal change to improve animal welfare across Canada. She was awarded Calgary’s Top 40 under 40, Global Woman of Vision and is a member of Woman for Humane Canada.

Fun Fact: Deanna is an avid traveler. She was in Indonesia in 2002 during a terrorist attack and credits the survival of this tragic experience as the point in her life that taught her to do what makes her happy every day, to be brave and bold, and to live without regret.
