"Snow, Sleet and Hail" Miniature Painting

Paul Jones (dec.) was a commercial illustrator and an avid collector/dealer in California who was involved with the art of many indigenous peoples from different parts of the world. He was a gifted restorer working with private individuals and museums. Even though he was not American Indian, the Hopi were his main interest – collecting, selling their work and visiting the Hopi villages each year. His paintings of many dance participants came from his unique sense of humor and as you can see, mudheads were his favorite.

Inscription on back: "NuvaK'chin Mana (Snow Kachina Girl). Three NuvaK'chin Manas most often seen during the Niman Ceremony. Their presence is a prayer for the coming of cold weather- so that snow will fall, melt and replenish the ground with moisture."
