"A Farewell to Gehrig" by Mike Schofield

“A Farewell to Gehrig"
In one of the most dramatic tributes ever delivered on a baseball field, 61,808 roaring fans bid an emotional farewell to Lou Gehrig between games of a July 4 double-header at Yankee Stadium. The two games between the Yankees and Washington Senators were merely background for the festivities honouring Gehrig, the great Iron Horse who two months earlier had been tragically forced by ill health to retire after playing in a major league-record 2,130 consecutive games. Gehrig’s outstanding career ended when he was diagnosed as having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a for of infantile paralysis.”
