Painting of Chenrezig, the deity of compassion

This stunning piece depicts Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion. Bodhisattvas are realised beings, inspired by the wish to attain complete enlightenment, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help all living beings.

Chenrezig has a special relationship with the people of Tibet. The Dalai Lamas are believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be manifestations of Chenrezig.

This work was created by Tibetan-Australian artist Karma Phuntsok, widely known for his dynamic expression of contemporary Buddhist art. Born in capital Lhasa in 1952, two years after China's invasion of Tibet, Karma and his family fled into exile after the Tibetan Uprising in 1959. As a young refugee in India, he studied traditional Tibetan thangka painting.

Since moving to Australia in 1981 and living in the bush in northern New South Wales, Karma has been producing a rare and unique range of Tibetan contemporary art, that interweaves traditional techniques and symbols with modern inspirations. His paintings are collected worldwide.

Karma has been a generous supporter of ATC's work.
