College Advisor

Alan Fraker, College Advisor, is offering four college counseling sessions. These sessions will help your family through some of the critical phases of the college admissions process. The sessions could include such elements as navigation of a pathway through the high school curriculum, self-inventory, exploration and identification of personal college criteria, optimizing the testing calendar and junior summer, the application process itself including primary and supplemental essays, selecting recommendations, interview rehearsals, and even on to steps beyond the senior year such as Gap Year considerations, applying to Honors programs, and more. He can also provide assistance with managing the athletic and artistic application and recruitment process and well as help with understanding the financial aid process and evaluation of offers of financial aid.

The counseling module of four hours will be distributed and divided as needed by your family and tailored to the individual student and the timing of your child(ren) in the process itself. Skype would be the primary communication medium, although face-to-face sessions are possible if geography allows. (He is located in Western Massachusetts.)

Alan has recently stepped down as Director of College Counseling at The Montclair Kimberley Academy. Before that, he was Director of College Advising at Deerfield Academy, and also served as its Academic Dean. He has been a national consultant to the College Board, the Educational Testing Service, and both Time and Newsweek magazines. His pioneering directorship of The Wye Institute (Maryland) Summer Program served as a model for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and he later directed their campus at Skidmore College. He has also taught at his alma mater, Dartmouth College, and worked with teachers from Duke University’s Talent Identification Program. Alan earned two Master’s Degrees at Duke and he has been a Senior Research Associate in the School of Education at Boston University and an Adjunct Faculty Member at Tufts University’s Child Development Center.

As both a professional and a parent of four grown children, Alan Fraker is intimately aware how very much the right college means in the lives of its graduates.
