Avalokiteshvara Statue

Large, solid Bronze Avalokiteshvara (Chenresig) statue in the 1000-armed, 11-headed form, cast using the lost-wax process in Nepal. This is a really nice quality statue, and quite heavy.

The origin-story of the 1000-armed form of Avalokiteshvara is as follows: Once, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara looked around at the sickness, sadness, anxiety, fear, hardship and death experienced by living beings and—feeling the intensity of the world’s pain— shattered into a thousand pieces. The Buddha Amitabha saw this, consoled him and put him back together again. After blessing him, Amitabha told him he would now—having experienced “falling apart”— be a thousand times as effective in helping others.

The thousand-armed form is the central figure for a popular fasting and purification practice called “nyungne”, written by the great female master Gelongma Palmo. This form is therefore also associated with resilience, purification and healing.
