My subjects range from made-up far-reaching vistas of the rural Southwest to ideas I get in my head. I'm inspired by newspaper pictures, photos by myself or others, everything. Many of the collages use my paintings and drawings as the subject. The materials are archival and ph balanced etc. To make a collage can take anywhere from a few hours to as many as 20 or so. It doesn't matter.

Artmaking feels good and keeps me out of trouble. I like to do painting, drawing, sculpting, collages and whatever comes my way. I studied art in college – it's a great community and place to get inspired and motivated. I learn a lot by doing.

I was raised by yard gnomes under a tall train trestle in southern France who grew squash and beans in their back yard and studied Chekhov by candlelight. They taught me to speak, but I only remember a few words. Amoeba. Acupuncture. Anomalies. We didn't get past the 'A's. I was a picky eater. I began making self-portraits from shiny objects, and wrote the pop tart cookbook, which is out of print.

One day a passing stranger in a donkey cart gave me a lift to the art supply store. I began to draw and paint. People came from miles around, walking backwards. I became the president of Harvard and ambassador to the U.N. Now I am in the witness protection program in Las Vegas, N.M., where I decorate pop tart wrappers and run a hostel for yard gnomes.

My socks don't match. I’m a pretty good writer. I don’t make much money at that. This is an excerpt from my novel. No, wait – no, it isn't.
