Bowling Bowl. Frank Beurskens
Bowling Bowl. Frank Beurskens. Recycled bowling ball. 8" diameter, 2 3/4" H.
A local bowling alley closed and an architectural junk yard purchased the remains, part of which was the wooden alley, assorted bowling balls, and storage racks. I couldn’t resist. I had to have it, but not sure for what. The alley ended up as a workbench, the rack was solid maple and became part of a table, and the balls, the balls, what can you do with fifty bowling balls? The old saying, ‘everything looks like a nail to a man with a hammer’ comes to mind. I have a lathe. A bowling ball is round. They’re all different colors and weights. I wonder what’s inside. The journey begins. Those heavy black balls are rubber with very hard material inside. But, those bright gaudy pink house balls, for kids, they’re different! This one of a kind “bowl” is both functional and a conversation piece, sure to resurrect fun times bouncing down the lane, knocking down a couple of pens! Available only on the online Charity Auction benefiting the Las Vegas, New Mexico Arts Council! Enjoy!
Driven by a need to create, experiment, and explore, I work as bricoleur, drawn to raw materials that have a soulful connection; something with a story. My artistic quest began with wood but now expands to all forms of matter as I begin to see something other than what is there, in everything, everywhere. The challenge is seeking simplicity in form and function while honoring the uniqueness of each material encountered “…where the inner shows itself in the outer, and the outer reflects the inner.”
