Chateau Montelena Winery 2015 Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Chateau Montelena is one of the most prominent and oldest Napa Valley wineries, tracing its origins back to 1882. In the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay outranked France’s best white burgundies. 

Chateau Montelena is not only famous for its Chardonnays, but also for spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon. They have produced close to 40 vintages of this flagship wine, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which is considered to be among the great examples of Cabernet in the world. 

The 2015 Estate Cabernet showcases the classic balance of Bordeaux structure and ripe California fruit that Chateau Montelena is known for. The wine went through an extensive 22 months maturation in 100% French oak and is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.  It has a long cellar life. 

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated it 95+ in February 2018:

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals vibrant cassis, crushed black plums and black raspberries notes with hints of fallen leaves, damp soil, cedar chest and charcoal plus a waft of lavender. Medium-bodied with plenty of lively, crunchy black and red fruits, it has a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and a long, youthful finish with the oak still standing out slightly. Give it another 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25-30+. 95+ points Age
