"An Open Window"
Print on canvas of a painting by Winslow Homer, 1872, created by Homer during one of his summer stays in the Town of Hurley.
An Open Window, 1872 in the collection of the Portland Museum of Art, Maine.
Print dimensions are 18 X 14 inches, the same as the original painting.
A woman stands near an open window wearing a black dress with a white lace shawl characteristic of Dutch 17th century costume. The descendants of Dutch settlers in Hurley held onto their Dutch culture and language well into the 19th century. A series of paintings with a window theme offered Homer the opportunity to study contrasts between darkness and light, interior and exterior, and geometric and human forms.
The date of this painting and its similarity to other Homer works, such as At the Window with its positively identified New York great chair, suggests the setting is the Wynkoop homestead on Wynkoop Road.
Dimensions: 14” X 18 “
