“Evening” Canvas print from an original oil painting by Winslow Homer, 1870
Winslow Homer (1836-1910)
Evening, 1870
Canvas print facsimile of Evening by Winslow Homer, 1870. The original painting is in the collection of The Portland Museum of Art, Maine.
Just north of Hurley on Hurley Mountain Road is the field where Homer most likely painted Evening. The lay of the land is unmistakable. The field is still open space with no structures or massive takeover by the forest. What lured Homer to that particular place? Was it the varied hues of the grasses? A wildness that fencing could not contain? The aura of quiet contentment? The distant view of the ridge on the horizon?
Evening was unknown to the public until the 1940s when Margaret Christian moved into a house where relatives of Homer once lived. There she found four rolled-up canvasses in a neglected corner, one of which was Evening. An art expert confirmed her suspicion that the paintings were indeed Winslow Homer’s creations.
