“In Memoriam” photo by Aaron Sylvan

“In Memoriam” is a photo of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated to those members of the Union Army who lost their lives in the American Civil War. It is located at 89th Street and Riverside Drive in Riverside Park in the Upper West Side of New York City.

The print is a Metallic Kodak Endure C-Print, face-mounted to 1/4” clear plexiglass for brilliant colors and a “still-wet” glossy look.  It’s backed on archival long-lasting Sintra, and constructed with an aluminum brace to allow hanging as-is on a wall, where it will appear to hover approximately 1” away from the wall. The monument is on West 89th Street and Riverside Drive, and its history is discussed in greater detail at https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/riverside-park/highlights/12871

Why I am donating to this cause: The incarcerated population of the United States is today one of our great tragedies and embarrassments as a nation.  And the fact that so many in prison suffer from limited literacy creates a far more insidious problem - how to become legally gainfully employed afterwards?  Not to mention the horrors of the innocent who are convicted and lack the skills or ability to defend themselves from a legal system which often has “a finger on the scale”, tipping decisions against certain groups.

Robert’s feet-on-the-ground work to help members of our young incarcerated population is noble, and I hope we can all find a way to support the cause.
