Hugh Stubbin's Citigroup Center - New York, NY

Hugh Stubbins iconic 1977 skyscraper is perhaps best known for its sloping crown and the unusual manner in which it meets the ground on four massive legs, creating an open space at the base for a sunken plaza and new church (where DoCoMoMo_US held our Tribute to Theo gala event in Sept. 2024). The building’s austere, abstract, prismatic geometry is captured in this limited edition model custom made for the Small Building Collectors Society (SBCS) meeting in New York- (see some of the other “registration gifts” elsewhere in this auction for more.) These were frequently made to the same scale so members could line them all up in their own “home skyline” and spanned over several representational types over the decades. This example is cast clear acrylic with a frosted grid representing the buildings strip windows.
