3 bottles of Single Malt Indian Whiskys - Rampur Select, Kamet, Paul John Brilliance

3 Single Malt Indian Whiskys - Rampur Select, Kamet, Paul John Brilliance

Rampur Select

Rampur Distillery was the original name for Radico Khaitan, India's fourth largest spirits company. It has been making whisky for more than half a century, and started producing malted barley for its blends in 1990, but only launched its first single malt for export in 2016. This is a creamy and malty whisky with notes of vanilla, apricot and apple.

  • Appearance - Golden amber.

  • Nose - Rich fruity top note, toffee in the background, floral, honey, dried fruits and hint of spice.

  • Palate - All round balanced taste with malt and creamy vanilla. Hint of fruits like apricot and apple with sweet and winey taste.

  • Finish - Rich & long.

Kamet

A fruity, spicy Indian single malt named after Mount Kamet, India's third-highest peak, Kamet whisky is made using Six Row barley, indigenous to India and grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, and is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-wine and ex-sherry casks. Aromas of dried fruit, citrus peel, oaky spice, vanilla and caramel fill the nose, complemented on the palate by notes of raisins, golden sultanas, dried apricots, peppery oak, vanilla, caramel and milk chocolate that linger in the finish.

Paul John Brilliance

An unpeated whisky from Paul John Distillers, released in early 2013 to much acclaim. It's made using barley from the foothills of the Himalayas and is distilled and matured in Goa, producing a fruity spirit with a creamy texture.

  • Nose - A complex amalgam of nougat, spotted dog pudding (sans sultanas!) and orange blossom honey with the vanilla spinning tangled webs just beneath. Honey is captured as the bourbon element expands...; a delicate gristiness ushers in a freshness to the custard tart.

  • Taste - The mouth feel exudes star quality with the barley generating all kinds of juicy riches with the light Demerara sugars forming an elegant accompaniment. A coppery spine is soon carrying the barley in varied forms while a gorgeous cocoa sub strata heralds in the spices which buzz the taste buds at will.

  • Finish - Beautifully relaxed: a light tingle from the spices pulses contentedly, the vanillas gather in deeper intensity yet the barley and copper stretches to the end.

  • Balance - Yet another astonishing malt from India. 46%.
