I am an immigrant to this country. I was very fortunate to come by free will rather than as a refugee, and I was fortunate to be easily accepted when I came, and yet I do not take my privilege for granted. Even in the best of circumstances I had to adapt and learn a different language and a different reality, and yet this country puzzles me more now than when I arrived over thirty years ago. I know and understand so much more about the US now, and yet I am at a loss to make sense of the cruel, heartless politics of the current time, including those pertaining to deportation and blocked entry to refugees.
