Deb Baillieul, a painter and fiber artist, centers her work on nature, culture, places she has lived and loved: New England, Ohio, Botswana, the Atlantic coast, and Caribbean. Her strong sense of place on this earth helps her to express her passion for making art. Her works records her journey.
Her paintings and fiber work influence each other. Strong color, line, texture and movement are evident in hand-dyed, painted, stamped, and screen printed fabrics. Deb incorporates natural elements as objects and tools on her largely abstract fiber wall hangings, adding beads, threads and found objects to sharpen the images.
In her paintings, Deb uses mainly acrylic paint, referencing many personal photos. These pieces include remnants from her experiences, traces of memory, which allow Deb to examine her purpose and connection to this world.
She study textiles, clothing and environmental arts receiving her undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts. Deb has attended the Quilt Surface Design Symposium (QSDS) for 22 years, discovering many artists who used fabric for expression-- but no patterns! For 18 years, she has taken part in a weekly open studio, currently led by painter Brent Payne at the Cultural Arts Center, Columbus, Ohio, working on composition, color and balance through her paintings
