"From Prison Cells to PhD: It is Never Too Late to Do Good"
by Stanley Andrisse
Yes, this is a story about how a man can be in actual prison and yet end up an endocrinologist at the Howard University School of Medicine. It is a story or resilience, of hope, of the mind of one who had a "successful" run in crime; of the manifold obstacles that get in a returning citizen's path after she or he has paid for the crime; of the allure of crime; of the prison industrial complex's inability to offer true rehabilitation; of potential and how cells depress it; of race and social science; of mental health and how cells deteriorate it; of romantic relationships and how cells sabotage it. Before he was at Howard University, Dr. Andrisse was a post-doctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Beyond Rhetoric is honored to have Stanley Andrisse's donation, a signed copy of his book. Speaking of America's response to its formerly convicted citizens, Andrisse simply says, "Society is missing out on talent." Beyond Rhetoric deeply believes there is so much untapped potential in those cells, so we go in! We highly recommend this book as one cannot read this book and not wonder if there are any other Stanley Andrisses locked away, distant from the hope of their potential.
