"Harbor" Mid-Twentieth Century Watercolor and Gouache on Paper by Chicago Artist Atsushi Kikuchi
Elegant watercolor and gouache on paper, c 1950s by artist Atsushi Kikuchi (Japanese/American, 20th Century).
Overall dimensions including silver/black professional framing are 46" x 19", matted. Excellent condition.
Atsushi Kikuchi was born in 1918 in Seattle, Washington, and spent much of his childhood in Japan. Atsushi returned to Seattle to attend and graduate high school, and went on to study art at The California College of Art and Crafts in Oakland, California; The Art Center in Los Angeles, CA; The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and The Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1942, Atsushi Kikuchi, his siblings, and parents were interned by the United States. In 1946, Atsushi began is US military service. He served as an Officer in the US Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in Occupied Japan. Atsushi was initially stationed on the island of Shikoku where he met his wife Shizuka Yano.
Atsushi began his career as a commercial layout artist and professional artist in Chicago, Illinois. While he painted in both watercolors and acrylics, his true passion was painting with watercolors. His prolific body of watercolor paintings earned him the Robert Rice Jenkins Memorial Prizes from the Art Institute of Chicago along with many other awards and honors.
