Albert Frey (1903–1998), one of the most important modern architects of our time, lived and worked in Palm Springs since 1934. Over a long and prolific career, he produced more than 200 building designs, including such notable local landmarks as the Palm Springs City Hall and the Aerial Tramway Valley Station with John Porter Clark.
Frey House ll, his long-time residence is perched high up on the hillside at the west end of Tahquitz Canyon Way, with views clear across the Valley.
This was Frey's second home in Palm Springs, completed in 1964 and is now part of the permanent collection of Palm Springs Art Museum. Rarely open to the public, and then only during Modernism Week, this iconic structure will be open only to the winning bidder and up to 5 guests. You and your guests will be able to tour the house at leisure, and enjoy a catered champagne and charcuterie reception as you watch the sun set and the lights begin to twinkle on across the Coachella Valley.
The book is an exquisitely designed 1st Edition hardback monograph, Albert Frey: Houses 1 and 2, focuses on two houses he built for himself in Palm Springs, California: one in 1941 (with an addition in 1953, no longer existent) and the other in 1964.
Although both houses have a modern aesthetic, including glass walls and concrete construction, they are fully incorporated into their surroundings, in keeping with Frey's principles of paralleling nature in his work. This book, which was developed in collaboration with Frey himself, includes color and duotone photographs commissioned especially for this book. The 10" x 8" book is cloth-bound and comes in a plastic slipcase.
