Bio: Cartwright was a member of the USF faculty (1975-2017) and founding dean of the School of Creative Arts in 2004 until his retirement in 2017. He oversaw the restoration of the Brookside Mansion and the rehabilitation of the Mimi and lan Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center. He was an integral leader in the design of the Music Technology Center, USF downtown site, and the Oratory of Saint Francis of Assisi - the first freestanding chapel at the university. Cartwright earned an MFA from Bowling Green State University and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Artist Statement: "...it is the commonalities, the differences, and the unexpected juxtapositions that bring life to these visual dramas." My work as an artist is based on the love of drawing and digital technology while working with actual and simulated texture. The study of the figure is important because it is a universal symbol that transcends all languages and socio-political barriers. Within the structure of the figure, one can express and present a broad range of human emotion and experience. The work most often contains some investigation of form, light, and spatial position. In some cases, the use of both the 2-D and 3-D forms in the same work strengthens the content by adding emotional and intellectual messages to the work of art. Often these symbols have historic meaning but sometimes they represent or are derived from our ever-changing visual culture.
