Artist’s Statement
Corine tends to observe and record elements to which she can easily relate in her own everyday life or from the past: an old home, a rocky pasture, a factory, a skating pond. She especially likes to paint out of doors, in nature. ‘Treeline and Field’ was completed on site in the autumn of 2020 at the McMaster Forest. The treeline depicted is located on the western perimeter of the property and includes a number of handsome red oaks which still had their leaves while most of the other surrounding trees were bare.
The paint in this particular piece was applied with a palette knife ‘en plein air’ during a spell of warm weather in October. Working this way makes for an interesting experience. Because the light changes so quickly, I’m forced to get on with the acts of mixing and applying the paint. It’s a very intuitive process as there’s no time for second guessing my interpretation of the scene.
