A qaspeq or atikluk is a traditional Yup'ik or Iñupiaq (Eskimo) shirt/dress made by the indigenous people of Alaska. Traditionally, they were made from natural materials like skins and furs. This one is a more fashion forward piece that can be worn in the 21st century.
In Alaska, there are 223 federally recognized tribes that each have a rich cultural history. As Western culture has influenced the state in the past 100 years, the Alaska Native people have adopted cultural norms of the United States while adhering to their indigenous roots. The values often taught in sewing are forgiveness, respect, sharing & perseverance.
