Sunrise on the Shields

In spring and early summer 2016 another artist and myself got up at 4AM so we could be painting on the Shields River just as the sun rose.

At dawn the connection of the water in the river and the water in the sky is So Evident!!! 

The colors are almost exactly the same. I am not a scientist by any stretch of anybody’s imagination but I like to imagine that is because the elements that make up the water and the air are the same. I used to be a  potter and I have been known to tell people that the reason my fish look so real is because the colors in their skin have the same  properties as the chemicals I use to make color in my glazing!!! ALERT!!! This is probably NOT TRUE per se… but it illustrates the way it is all connected. We are all stardust!!! And Water more than anything connects us.

It is a wonderful exercise that I recommend for everyone. Get to a river before sunrise and watch as the color appears. There will be a moment when you cannot tell the difference between water and air, river and sky. Be careful, you might swoon. After all there is not much that divides the water in you as well.
