Bronze Canteen
Bronze Canteen
Mixed Media: Gourd, leather, metal, ammonite fossil
7"H x 7"D + hanging strap of 13"
Bronze Canteen is a "canteen gourd", so called for its shape. I put many layers of ink dyes on this one to create a bronze look, attached a recycled metal piece from a light socket to resemble the drinking spout, and attached a piece of gourd to the front that supports an ammonite fossil, a reminder of the origins of ocean life. Leather straps, metal and bead embellishments complete this piece. Gourds are ancient plants that have been essential to humans for thousands of years. They have been found on almost every continent and have been made into bowls, scoops, musical instruments, and containers. Most importantly, they have sustained humans as all-important food storage, seed storage, and of course, portable water "canteens."
My reason for participating in this event is twofold. First, bringing attention to the importance of water to all life is critical. Secondly, the importance of organizations that promote education relative to water and issues such as conservation, is so worthy of support. My hope is that this event will provide Project WET with funds to continue its wonderful work.
