Lotus Canteen
Lotus Canteen
Mixed Media: wood burned Gourd, leather, metal
9"Hx 9"D + hanging strap of 12"
Lotus Canteen is a gourd actually called a "canteen gourd" for its shape. I woodburned lotus shapes onto it, colored the background with inks and other dyes, including a subtle patina, and attached a recycled, rusted metal napkin ring to the top to resemble the drinking spout. Leather straps, and metal pieces embellish this piece. Gourds are ancient plants that have been essential to humans for thousands of years. They have been found on almost every continent and have been made into bowls, scoops, musical instruments, and containers. Most importantly, they have sustained humans as all-important food storage, seed storage, and of course, portable water "canteens."
My reason for participating in this event is twofold. First, bringing attention to the importance of water to all life is critical. Secondly, the importance of organizations that promote education relative to water and issues such as conservation, is so worthy of support. My hope is that this event will provide Project WET with funds to continue its wonderful work.
