About the Artist

Painting was Rick Dickinson’s first love, but construction his first career. A native of upstate NY, Dickinson graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology with a degree in engineering and enjoyed a successful career as an executive in the construction industry.

In 2007, he left the construction business to become a full-time painter. Dickinson’s formal art education includes extensive study with Paul Ingbretson at the Ingbretson Studio of Drawing and Painting, and study with Lois Griffel, Ty Hodanish, Ann Templeton, and Don Stone among others. Dickinson also had instruction at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and Maine College of Art.

Now, Dickinson works in a painting style known as the Boston School. Boston School painting is the culmination of the development of artistic craftsmanship refined by the great masters of Europe over the centuries since the Renaissance and as developed by a group of Boston painters at the turn of the 20th century. More specifically, it is the amalgamation of the Impressionists treatment and knowledge of color with the academics’ fine rendering.

The compositions are thoughtful and well-balanced, the values and chroma perfectly related, textures exquisitely rendered, and the subject matter focused on beauty. There is no evidence of labor, and the brushwork is never sloven. Light effect and atmosphere pervade Dickinson’s paintings.

Dickinson’s work hang in Maine galleries and several private collections. Dickinson and his wife Pandora live on Southport, Maine.
