The late Dr. Rita Matthews was the first presenter at Flying Cloud Institute’s Young Women in Science program in 2000. A microbiologist, she was the first woman to do research at McMurdo Station, the main American base in Antarctica. An expert in fish cold water metabolism and a leader of wildlife expeditions, she was one of the first women in the International Explorer’s Club. Dr. Matthews documented her travels with photography. The photographs were donated to Flying Cloudn Institute in her memory.
